Workers compensation scheme for NI progressing

The new workers compensation arrangements for Norfolk Island are moving forward, with the formal signing of the contract between service provider Gallagher Bassett and the Australian Government on 27 October.

Gallagher Bassett are experts in claim management and their extensive experience in workers’ compensation places them well to deliver the local workers’ compensation scheme.

The new compensation scheme will commence in January 2021, with Gallagher Bassett currently working with the Norfolk Island Regional Council and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications to ensure a smooth hand-over of services.

Gallagher Basset’s role in administering the new scheme will include assessing claims for compensation, managing compensation payments and providing information and support for employers and employees who are part of the scheme.

Gallagher Bassett will be visiting Norfolk Island in the week commencing 16 November to meet with key people from Council, the local business and employment sector, health and the local community.

They will be available to answer any questions relating to the new Workers Compensation scheme and provide support and advice to the community, including new or existing Scheme members.

To implement the new arrangements, some legislative changes are required to the Employment Act 1988 (NI). These changes will focus on the administration of the Scheme and will have minimal effect on the community. Consistent with the Community Engagement Framework, information will be available to the community as the work progresses.
