Kingston Pier Channel Project — Stakeholder Consultation
Kingston Pier Channel Construction project consultants, Advisian, will be on Norfolk Island from 17 to 21 February to meet with regular users of Kingston Pier and begin new technical investigations to inform designs to deepen and widen the channel.
Advisian has been engaged by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications (the Department) as the design services contractor for the project which aims to improve safety and access for users, and ensure it meets required navigation standards.
The deepening and widening of the channel was raised with Assistant Minister Nola Marino during her visit to Norfolk Island in late 2019. The project was highlighted as being important to pier users and the broader community.
Next week’s visit by Advisian will include sediment sampling and ecological (aquatic and terrestrial) surveys, as well as meetings with stakeholders to leverage local knowledge and expertise, and confirm operational requirements for the channel.
Broader community consultation will be scheduled in coming months in line with the Norfolk Island Community Engagement Framework.
The data and information gathered on this trip will also form part of the application process for approvals under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth).
It is important to note that these consultations are part of the design stage for the project. Progression to the construction stage would be subject to community and Government priorities and the outcome of future budget processes.
Any enquiries about the project can be made to: NIKingstonChannel@advisian.com.au.
