Telling the Stories of KAVHA

The Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area (KAVHA) Advisory Committee is committed to bringing to life stories from KAVHA’s truly unique past in a way that will stimulate and engage visitors to discover and remember Norfolk Island’s outstanding heritage.

An Interpretation Plan is being developed to ensure that a broad range of stories are interpreted at KAVHA. This includes Pitcairn, convict and Polynesian history, reflecting Norfolk Island’s distinctive, layered and living heritage. The plan aims to excite the imagination of visitors and to tell the unique stories that truly set the site apart from anywhere else in the world.

The project to develop an Interpretation Plan for KAVHA is a collaboration between the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities. It aims to implement the KAVHA Heritage Management Plan (2016) recommendation that the site’s Heritage Interpretation Strategy be reviewed and developed into a project-based Interpretation Plan.

Funding has been allocated this financial year for the implementation of initial priority projects identified in the plan. This will mean that the plan can deliver some immediate and tangible interpretation products and experiences for KAVHA to engage the broadest possible audience in the appreciation and conservation of the site.

As a leading interpretative design, exhibition and heritage planning consultancy, Convergence Design Australia has been engaged to guide the project. Convergence Design Australia has experience on projects of national significance both across Australia and overseas. Its name is derived from an interest in converging serious historical insights, artefacts and traditional interpretation techniques with contemporary and emerging technologies.

The Project Team will be on-island for field work and targeted consultation during the week beginning 18 November 2018. If you would like to find out more about the development of the plan, please contact my office on +6723 22152 or at office.administrator@nlk.regional.gov.au.
