The Australian Government announced a pilot Regional Deal for Albury Wodonga on 20 March 2019.
The Regional Deal is an opportunity to ensure that Albury Wodonga prospers over the next decade by supporting population growth and economic development while also ensuring it remains a nationally-significant, liveable and prosperous region.
Like the other Regional Deals, the Albury Wodonga Regional Deal is a collaboration between the Australian Government, New South Wales Government, Victorian Government, Albury City Council and the City of Wodonga Council, working together to help the region reach its maximum potential.
Local businesses, industry and the community will be engaged to ensure the Regional Deal reflects locally-identified priorities and the community's aspirations for their region.
To support the development of the Regional Deal, the Australian Government has provided an initial investment of $3.2 million to support further strategic planning and projects with the local community.
Current Status
On 10 July 2020, the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, Minister Symes, Deputy Premier Barilaro, Mayor Speedie and Mayor Mack agreed the scope and governance arrangements for Deal negotiations and signed the Statement of Intent.
The Statement of Intent outlines a shared vision from all three levels of government for the Albury Wodonga Regional Deal, centered on six priority areas: economic development, harmonisation of cross-border issues, infrastructure and connectivity, liveability, quality regional education and health services, and supporting the Indigenous community.
The Albury Wodonga Regional Deal will be negotiated by mid-2021. Consultation is a key part of this process, and a formal local stakeholder consultation process will be undertaken in the second half of 2020.
