MarnGrook on Diamond Creek: Sport on a level playing field

Marngrook on Diamond Creek: Sport on a Level Playing Field brought together a number of Victorian-based organisations. This event was organised by a committee facilitated by Nillumbik Shire Council’s Community Development Officer. In addition to the football and netball games played between Indigenous and non-Indigenous teams, there was also a photographic and video exhibition of indigenous sporting memorabilia, art work of an Indigenous theme and Indigenous entertainment. The community was also invited to plant an ANTaR hand for Reconciliation on the local MarnGrook Oval. The aim of the day was to showcase the sporting talents of young Indigenous people. The event sought to provide the community with a vision for how a shared interest in sport can bring people together to focus on what they have in common rather than what their differences may be. The event was a community-planned event, which ensured that the groups and individuals involved were able to develop expertise for event organisation and extend their networks to enable them undertake a similar project in their local area. Involvement of the Indigenous community and associated organisations in the day ranged from individuals, including a Wurundjeri elder, Aboriginal sporting role models, players, club members and supporters, through to the Nillumbik Reconciliation Group, Aboriginal Affairs Victoria, Koori Heritage Trust and ANTaR. This level of support highlights the importance that the Indigenous community places on creating opportunities for their young people to enjoy themselves and promote their talents within the community.
