Alice Springs Town Council - Town Camps Dog Control Program
Alice Springs Town Council
Alice Springs Town Council prides itself in offering a high standard of services to the community. The Council Ranger Unit works toward this goal by enforcing the Alice Springs Animal Management By-laws 2008. The aim of these by-laws is to provide comprehensive and ongoing animal management within the municipality of Alice Springs. Further to this Council has been implementing a specific dog control program within town camps across Alice Springs.
The Alice Springs Town Council has been coordinating this successful dog control program in 18 town camps since December 2008. The core component of the program is the education and enforcement of the 2 dogs per house limit, with each of these dogs to be registered with Council, de-sexed and micro-chipped.
Council works closely with Alice Springs town camps to administer this dog control program and maintains the program by holding regular meeting with individual residences, presidents and committee members. Council also runs community BBQ events where we promote the program to residents and encourage them to have their dogs registered, de-sexed and micro-chipped with this service provided for residents on the spot. Often vets also attend so as they can offer advice and de-sex the animals.
Council is able to coordinate this dog control program with funding from the Federal Government and the program has produced many positive outcomes. The residents of the town camps have been very cooperative and program work is continuing. The initial funding was awarded in December 2008 for a 6 month program which started immediately. Due to the success of the program an extension of a further 6 months was granted till June 2009. The program is currently being funded under the NTG Department of Justice until June 2010.
